Learning and Teaching
What is the mode of learning in Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila School?
In alignment with the Department of Education’s policy on flexible learning arrangements and current government energy-saving directives, the school is implementing a 4-1 blended learning modality.
Students attend four days of onsite, face-to-face classes, while one day is set aside for remote learning to reduce the school’s overall energy footprint.
On the remote day, Kindergarten to Grade 6 students join synchronous online sessions for real-time interaction with teachers. High School students shift to asynchronous online learning to build independent study habits and digital self-management.
What approach do you use in teaching children?
The school follows the Department of Education’s K to 12 curriculum while enriching instruction through Lorenzo’s vision, mission, and philosophy of holistic education.
Teaching emphasizes academic excellence and character formation, guided by the Ruizian values of communion, service, and excellence. The Preschool to Grade 10 curriculum follows a spiral and developmental design so students build knowledge and skills progressively.
For Senior High School, instruction is designed to be inquiry-based, interdisciplinary, and outcomes-driven. Students are expected to strengthen critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, digital literacy, research competence, and global awareness.
Lessons use student-centered strategies and authentic tasks such as research work, problem-based learning, internships, and community involvement so students can connect classroom learning with real-life contexts.
How do you assess children’s progress?
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning at Lorenzo. The school uses varied methods, including formative and summative assessments, individual and group tasks, and continuous classroom evaluation.
These are aligned with the K to 12 curriculum and designed to develop 21st-century skills. Assessment also reflects the school’s PUSO, TALINO, and TALENTO framework so both academic growth and character development are measured.
Student Development
How does the school support the holistic development of students?
Lorenzo is committed to developing the whole child intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
Its holistic program focuses on three key areas: academic competence, character and spiritual formation, and personal growth and well-being.
The curriculum is structured according to each learner’s stage of development and reflects the school’s identity as a Catholic, Filipino, and lay institution.
What are the school’s educational thrusts?
Character Formation (PUSO) focuses on values formation, discipline, and spiritual growth through programs such as the Christian Life Program and Guidance and Counseling Program.
Academic Competence (TALINO) develops intellectual ability, knowledge, and critical thinking through knowledge areas such as CLE, Values Education, GMRC, Science, and Social Studies; skills areas such as English, Filipino, and Mathematics; and enabling areas such as TLE, Computer, and MAPEH.
Personal Enhancement (TALENTO) nurtures talents and interests through the Student Activity Program and other special programs.
How do you discipline children?
Based on the student handbook, Grades 1 to 3 follow formative intervention and discipline, while Grades 4 to 12 follow a combination of progressive and restorative discipline.
Teachers and school personnel work closely with students to help them understand their behavior and make better choices. The Guidance and Counseling Office provides additional support when needed.
The school strictly follows child protection policies. Physical punishment is not allowed, and all disciplinary actions follow due process.
What is the typical class size?
Class size varies by level:
- Kindergarten: around 25 students
- Grades 1 to 3: around 30 to 35 students
- Grades 4 to 11: around 40 students
The school ensures that classes remain conducive to effective learning.
Do students have a uniform?
Yes. Students are required to wear the prescribed school uniform at all times unless otherwise announced. On designated days, appropriate civilian attire may be allowed.
Parents and Partnership
What do you expect from parents as partners in the holistic formation of Ruizians?
Parents are considered essential partners in their child’s development. They are encouraged to support and reinforce school values at home, maintain open communication with teachers, and monitor their child’s responsibilities and progress.
Announcements may be posted through Microsoft Teams, the Parent Portal, or parents’ group chats, and students are expected to record tasks in their planners. While independence is encouraged, parents are still advised to guide their children, especially in meeting deadlines.
